The maritime transport sector contributes nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making it a key priority in international climate negotiations. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping by at least 40% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Sustainable biofuels—such as ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas-derived fuels—are emerging as immediate, scalable, and cost-effective solutions to lower emissions across the global shipping fleet.
This panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges of expanding sustainable fuel use in the maritime sector, focusing on how biofuels can complement other low-carbon technologies to help countries meet IMO targets and advance a sustainable global shipping economy.
